The application of lighting to many areas of our lives is very visible in all corners. If for nothing at all, take a look around you in the night and imagine yourself without it.
It has become an integral part of modern life. Apart from using lighting for our domestic and business needs, we have also found creative ways using it in entertainment, especially in theatre.
The history of theatre started in the city of Athens in Greek, where it originated. Theatre was part of the Greek culture and it encompasses their festivals, music, politics, religion, poetry etc.
Western theatre started with the Romans in the 4th century, before spreading to Asian countries such as India.
Theatre has advanced tremendously throughout the ages. It is no longer a matter of being able to act, but also involves technical aspects, which is now refered to as stagecraft. One major component of the technicalities involved in stagecraft is lighting.
The create an effective stage lighting will normally require a designer The lighting designer will make sure that the lighting effects works in line with the entire production. In doing so, he also ensures that issues of visibility and safety is dealt with effectively.
He has to work closely with the director, choreographer, set designer, costume designer, and sound designer in order to achieve a quality production.
